Our Story
Based out of an old theatre building in San Antonio, Texas, Adolph and Martha Beck envisioned for themselves a business that would combine their skillsets and their passion for the arts. With a little cash and a lot of determination, the Becks founded Texas Scenic in 1936 and watched it grow into the premier one-stop shop for performance halls builders; a needed partner that could design, build, and install theatrical stage equipment.
In the early days of the business, Adolph got the word out for their services by hosting lavish parties for the military NCO clubs around town. He worked with local schools and small theaters to sell advertising on the stage curtains he installed to help cover the cost for their stage equipment needs. Martha was the original stage curtain seamstress and would take Adolph’s measurements and cut and sew the materials to spec, passing them back to her husband who would then go install them.
By the 1960s, Adolph and Martha’s daughter Mildred had married Glenn Martin, Jr., and the two carried on the Becks’ tradition of providing high quality stage products to area theatres and performance venues. Glenn learned the business from the bottom up, a self-educated and driven entrepreneur in his own right, and continued to learn the trade, getting involved with the trade associations, and staying on the forefront of advances in the stage equipment industry. When his son, Glen Martin, III, got into the family business, he followed in his father’s footsteps, pushing the business towards rigging equipment as the next crucial product line for Texas Scenic to invest in.
In the 1980s, Glenn III took over as president with an eye towards the next phase of the business. He and lifelong friend and coworker Richard Mecke, an engineering grad from Texas A&M University, started growing the company further, expanding services to include a broader, more comprehensive product offering in theatrical equipment and supplies. Another critical change during this time was a decision they made to start manufacturing more products in house and retain more control on the quality of the products, all the way down to the raw materials they chose.
As performance spaces continued to evolve Texas Scenic stayed on top of the industry, adding products and services to meet their clients’ needs. In the 2000s, motorized rigging took off as an industry standard, and once again, Texas Scenic Company, under the leadership of Richard, as president, and Steve Surratt, as chief operating officer, ensured that the company was in the position to take advantage of the high demand as they made this line the focal point of the company’s manufacturing business. That foresight is still evident today as motorized rigging continues to be our number one product category.
In 2018, Pook Diemont Ohl, a regional northeast stage equipment manufacturer/installer company was acquired by Texas Scenic along with their premier sub brand acouStaCorp, industry-leading adjustable acoustic curtains. This merger gave Texas Scenic a strategic foothold into the east-coast market, making it possible to increase business opportunities in this region.
In 2022, another acquisition gave Texas Scenic a strategic advantage in the industry. H&H Specialties, a leader in the stage rigging and equipment manufacturing industry was based on the west coast, in City of Industry, CA. This acquisition gave Texas Scenic an additional geographic footprint, spanning from coast to coast.
Today, our vision is to provide a place for the next generation of leaders in the company to continue on this entrepreneurial path, driving the company and our industry up a path of discovery and innovation in theatrical design and equipment capabilities.
